The Italian Alps are well known for skiing and offers dozens of mountain resorts, from the zone of Livigno, to the glitzy Cervinia. But what not many people know is that it is possible to ski on Mount Etna in Sicily - Italy's mafia soaked Mediterranean Island, which lies south of the country.
Etna is the largest and highest volcano in Europe and one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and is in a state of almost continuous state ofthe eruption. Sicily was chosen by the gods of Olympus as the scene for their stories of love and war, passion and revenge, and it was Mount Etna - the realm of Vulcan, god of fire - which is the home of the monster with one eye known as the Cyclops, today there is still a land of fire and latent anger.
The construction of a ski on an active volcano is not without difficulties, continuous eruptions and lava flows have repeatedly damaged or destroyed several systems of lifts in the past. InIn October 2002, the fiery lava streams flowed from the crater of Mount Etna, engulfing small buildings, burning pine trees, pushed over ski-lift pylons, knocking down power lines and a ski school hut before swallowing around a mountain empty (all evacuation orders). However, the Sicilians have become accustomed, in the shadow of the volcano, live and have built up again and again what the lava destroyed.
Skiers and snowboarders to describe the experience as Etnalike no other in the Alps: "It 's a great place to ski - on a clear day you can see the sea while you have a cloud of gas and steam steadily increases from the top.
There are two ski areas on Mount Etna, on the southern side is the Rifugio Sapienza and the North Station and Lingfield. As with any ski trip in Italy, accommodation, lessons and ski resort is in both. The snow also offers a wideOpportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding.
Despite the latitude of the volcano Etna in the warm seas of the Mediterranean, is the height of 3350m, which in winter snow depth is replaced, even at lower altitudes up to 1800m. The area also offers many beautiful Sicilian hospitality and authentic cuisine.
Danger zone, if you're looking for a ski trip to Mount Etna boils, Italy should definitely be on your list. Just watch out forLava.
