It is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at and elevation of 6,225 ft (1,897 m). Its striking blue waters offer picturesque views from dozens of mountain tops and 72 miles of shoreline. It falls on the border of California and Nevada and is a major year-round vacation destination.

For winter travel, Lake Tahoe and is home to numerous world class ski resorts. Pacific coastal storms deliver 300-500 inches of annual snowfall to the local ski resorts.
